György Vashegyi is a Hungarian conductor, musicologist, and founder of the period-instrument ensemble Orfeo Orchestra and the Purcell Choir. He was born on August 19, 1953, in Debrecen, Hungary, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. Vashegyi started playing the piano at the age of six and later studied the violin and the viola. Vashegyi attended the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he studied conducting with Ervin Lukács and composition with Ferenc Farkas. He graduated in 1978 and went on to pursue a career as a conductor. He started his career as a conductor in Hungary, where he worked with several orchestras, including the Hungarian State Opera, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. Vashegyi has received many awards and honors for his work as a conductor and musicologist. In 2008, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary for his contributions to Hungarian culture. In 2011, he received the Bartók-Pásztory Award, which is given to outstanding Hungarian musicians. In 2016, he was awarded the Kossuth Prize, which is the highest cultural award in Hungary. In addition to his work as a conductor, Vashegyi is also a respected musicologist. He has published many articles and books on Baroque and Classical music, including a book on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
