He began playing the violin at the age of six and quickly developed a talent for the instrument. Ward's musical education began at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned violinist Frederick Grinke. He later went on to study at the Royal College of Music, where he was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal for his outstanding performance in the final examination. After completing his studies, Ward began his professional career as a violinist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional talent and was soon in high demand as a soloist. In 1979, he was appointed as the leader of the Northern Sinfonia, a position he held for over a decade. During his time with the Northern Sinfonia, Ward made several notable recordings, including Mozart's Violin Concertos and Beethoven's Violin Concerto. He also performed as a soloist with the orchestra, receiving critical acclaim for his performances of works by Bach, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. In 1991, Ward left the Northern Sinfonia to pursue a career as a conductor. He was appointed as the principal conductor of the Northern Chamber Orchestra, a position he held for over 20 years. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including works by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Ward's conducting career also saw him work with several other orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
