The Northern Chamber Orchestra is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Manchester, England. Founded in 1967, the orchestra has established itself as one of the leading chamber orchestras in the United Kingdom, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The Northern Chamber Orchestra was founded by a group of musicians who were passionate about chamber music and wanted to create a platform for the performance of this genre in the North of England. The founding members included violinists Nicholas Ward and Norman George, violist Brian O'Kane, cellist Anthony Pleeth, and double bassist Roger Cawkwell. The ensemble started with just six players, but over the years, it has grown to become a full chamber orchestra with up to 24 players. The orchestra's main members have changed over the years, but the ensemble has always attracted some of the finest musicians in the country. Some of the notable members of the orchestra over the years include violinists Nicholas Ward, David Juritz, and Matthew Truscott, violist Brian O'Kane, cellists Anthony Pleeth and Richard Tunnicliffe, and double bassist Roger Cawkwell. The Northern Chamber Orchestra has performed extensively throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, earning a reputation for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The orchestra has collaborated with some of the world's leading soloists, including pianists Stephen Hough and Peter Donohoe, violinists Tasmin Little and Jennifer Pike, and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. One of the highlights of the Northern Chamber Orchestra's career was its performance at the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. The orchestra was invited to perform at the wedding ceremony at St. Paul's Cathedral, where it played Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" and Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3." The Northern Chamber Orchestra has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1997, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award for its outstanding contribution to chamber music. The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings, including its recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos with pianist Stephen Hough. In addition to its performances and recordings, the Northern Chamber Orchestra is also committed to music education and outreach. The orchestra runs a successful education program, which includes workshops, masterclasses, and concerts for young people. The orchestra also works closely with local schools and community groups to promote classical music and inspire the next generation of musicians. Overall, the Northern Chamber Orchestra is a world-class ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music.
