Lorenzo Ghielmi is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music through his exceptional skills as a harpsichordist, organist, and conductor. Born in Milan, Italy, in 1959, Ghielmi showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the harpsichord and organ, which became his primary instruments. Ghielmi's musical education began at the Milan Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, a prominent harpsichordist and organist. He later continued his studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where he was mentored by Jean-Claude Zehnder and Andrea Marcon. During his time at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Ghielmi developed a deep understanding of early music and the Baroque period, which would later become his area of expertise. After completing his studies, Ghielmi began his career as a soloist and chamber musician, performing at various venues across Europe and the United States. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills and was invited to perform at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Festival de La Roque d'Anthéron. In addition to his work as a soloist, Ghielmi has also collaborated with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Academy of Ancient Music. He has also worked with renowned conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. One of the highlights of Ghielmi's career was his appointment as the artistic director of the International Organ Festival in Milan, a position he held from 1996 to 2000. During his tenure, he brought together some of the world's leading organists and established the festival as one of the most important events in the organ music calendar. Ghielmi has also been recognized for his contributions to the world of music, receiving numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1992, he was awarded the prestigious Erwin Bodky Award by the Cambridge Society for Early Music, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of early music. He has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music industry, for his recordings of Bach's Goldberg Variations and Handel's Suites for Harpsichord. In addition to his work as a performer, Ghielmi is also a respected music educator and has taught at some of the world's leading music institutions, including the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana, and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. He has also published several articles and books on early music and the history of the harpsichord.
