Jean-Baptiste Forqueray was a French composer and virtuoso viola da gamba player who lived from 1699 to 1782. He was born in Paris, the son of Antoine Forqueray, a famous viol player and composer in his own right. Jean-Baptiste showed an early aptitude for music and began studying the viol at a young age under his father's tutelage. As a teenager, Forqueray became a member of the French royal court orchestra, where he quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest viol players of his time. He also began composing his own music, which was heavily influenced by the French Baroque style of his father and other composers of the time, such as Marin Marais. Forqueray's most famous works are his five suites for viola da gamba and basso continuo, which he composed in the 1720s and 1730s. These suites are considered some of the finest examples of French Baroque music for the viola da gamba, and are still widely performed and recorded today. Each suite consists of several movements, including allemandes, courantes, sarabandes, and gigues, as well as more unusual forms such as chaconnes and fugues. Forqueray's music is characterized by its virtuosic and expressive use of the viola da gamba, as well as its intricate and ornate ornamentation. In addition to his compositions for the viola da gamba, Forqueray also wrote several pieces for harpsichord, including a set of variations on the popular French folk song "La Folia." He also collaborated with other composers of the time, such as Jean-Philippe Rameau, and was highly regarded as a performer and teacher. Despite his success as a musician, Forqueray's personal life was marked by tragedy and scandal. He was married twice, and both of his wives died young. He also had a tumultuous relationship with his father, who disapproved of his son's decision to pursue a career as a musician rather than a lawyer. In his later years, Forqueray suffered from poor health and financial difficulties, and was forced to sell his valuable collection of instruments and music manuscripts. He died in Paris in 1782, largely forgotten by the musical world. However, in the years since his death, Forqueray's music has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, and he is now recognized as one of the greatest composers for the viola da gamba of the French Baroque era. His works continue to be studied, performed, and recorded by musicians around the world, and his legacy as a virtuoso performer and innovative composer lives on.
