Born in Manchester, England, on 23rd May 1960, Howarth grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a keen amateur singer, and her mother played the piano. Howarth began her formal music education at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she studied under the tutelage of Frederic Cox.
