Born on May 26, 1938, in Toronto, Canada, Stratas grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, a Greek immigrant, was a bouzouki player, and her mother was a singer. Stratas began singing at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Stratas received her formal training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She made her professional debut at the age of 18 in a production of La Bohème with the Canadian Opera Company. Her performance was well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a rising star in the opera world. In 1959, Stratas moved to New York City to study at the Juilliard School. She continued to perform with the Canadian Opera Company and made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1962 in the role of Poussette in Manon. She quickly became a favorite of audiences and critics alike, and her career took off. Over the course of her career, Stratas has performed in some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. She has worked with some of the most renowned conductors and directors in the industry, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Franco Zeffirelli. One of Stratas's most notable performances was in the role of Sally Bowles in the original Broadway production of Cabaret in 1966. Her performance earned her a Tony Award nomination and helped to establish her as a versatile performer who could excel in both opera and musical theater. Stratas's repertoire is extensive and includes a wide range of roles, from Mozart's Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro to Puccini's Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Richard Strauss, including the roles of Salome and Elektra.
