He was one of the most influential figures in contemporary classical music, known for his innovative approach to composition and his unique interpretations of classical works. Zender began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and composition with his father, a composer and conductor. He later studied musicology, philosophy, and German literature at the universities of Frankfurt and Heidelberg, where he earned his doctorate in 1963. In the early years of his career, Zender worked as a conductor and music director for various orchestras in Germany, including the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also served as the artistic director of the Frankfurt Opera from 1984 to 1987. As a composer, Zender was known for his experimental approach to music, often incorporating elements of improvisation, electronic music, and non-Western musical traditions into his works. He was particularly interested in exploring the relationship between music and language, and many of his compositions were inspired by literary works. One of Zender's most famous works is his interpretation of Schubert's Winterreise, a song cycle for voice and piano. Zender's version, which he called "composed interpretation," was first performed in 1993 and featured a full orchestra and a solo vocalist. The work was praised for its innovative approach to the original material and its ability to bring new life to a classic work. Zender's other notable works include his opera Stephen Climax, which premiered in 1986, and his orchestral work Schuberts Unvollendete, which was commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1993. Throughout his career, Zender received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1992, he was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He was also awarded the German Music Publishers' Association Prize in 1996 and the Frankfurt Music Prize in 2002. Zender continued to compose and conduct music until his death on October 22, 2019, at the age of 82. His innovative approach to music and his unique interpretations of classical works have had a lasting impact on the world of classical music, and he will be remembered as one of the most important figures in contemporary classical music.More....
