Founded in 1867, the choir has a rich history of performing with some of the most celebrated conductors and orchestras in the world. The choir was originally established as the Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam, a group of amateur singers who came together to perform choral works. In 1888, the choir was invited to perform at the opening of the Concertgebouw, a new concert hall in Amsterdam. The performance was a great success, and the choir was subsequently invited to become the resident choir of the Concertgebouw. Under the leadership of conductor Willem Mengelberg, the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Mengelberg was a visionary conductor who believed in the power of music to unite people and promote peace. He led the choir in performances of works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and other great composers, and his innovative interpretations helped to establish the choir as one of the finest in the world. Over the years, the Royal Concertgebouw Chorus has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. The choir has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated conductors of the 20th century, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Claudio Abbado. One of the highlights of the choir's history was its performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 in 1954. The performance, which was conducted by Mengelberg, was a landmark event in the history of classical music. It featured over 1,000 performers, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam, and several other choirs. The performance was a huge success, and it helped to establish Mahler's reputation as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. In addition to its performances with orchestras, the Royal Concertgebouw Chorus has also performed many works on its own. The choir has a vast repertoire of choral works, ranging from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary music. Some of the choir's most notable performances include its rendition of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, which it has performed annually since 1921, and its performance of Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, which was conducted by the composer himself in 1952. Over the years, the Royal Concertgebouw Chorus has received many awards and accolades for its performances. In 1999, the choir was awarded the Edison Classical Music Award for its recording of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem. The choir has also been awarded the Prix Italia, the Grand Prix du Disque, and the Diapason d'Or. Today, the Royal Concertgebouw Chorus continues to be one of the world's leading classical music ensembles. Under the leadership of conductor Karel Mark Chichon, the choir continues to perform with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and other leading orchestras around the world. The choir's commitment to excellence and its dedication to promoting the power of music continue to inspire audiences around the world.More....
