Born on May 22, 1983, in Budapest, Hungary, Héja showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he received his degree in piano performance in 2007. After completing his studies, Héja began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts and recitals throughout Hungary and Europe. However, he soon discovered his passion for conducting and began studying with renowned conductors such as Zoltán Kocsis and Péter Eötvös. Héja's talent as a conductor quickly became apparent, and he was soon invited to lead orchestras in Hungary and abroad. In 2010, he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 2013. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including a critically acclaimed recording of Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra. In addition to his work with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Héja has conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de Lille, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and violinist Vadim Gluzman. Héja's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the classical, romantic, and modern eras. He has a particular affinity for the music of his fellow Hungarians, including Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, and György Ligeti. He has also championed the music of contemporary composers, including Péter Eötvös, whose opera "Angels in America" he conducted in 2018. Héja's performances have been praised for their energy, precision, and musicality. He is known for his ability to bring out the best in his musicians, and for his deep understanding of the music he conducts. His performances are often characterized by their emotional intensity and their ability to connect with audiences on a profound level. In addition to his work as a conductor, Héja is also an accomplished pianist. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in many prestigious venues, including the Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Festival Hall in London. He has also recorded several albums as a pianist, including a critically acclaimed recording of Bartók's "Mikrokosmos." Héja's talent and dedication have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2011, he was awarded the Junior Prima Prize, one of Hungary's most prestigious awards for young artists. In 2013, he was named a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, in recognition of his contributions to Hungarian culture. He has also been awarded the Liszt Prize, the highest honor for musicians in Hungary. Despite his many accomplishments, Héja remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to work tirelessly to bring the beauty and power of classical music to audiences around the world, and to inspire the next generation of musicians and music lovers.
