Smolij grew up in a family of musicians, and his parents were both professional pianists. His father, Jan Smolij, was a professor of piano at the Krakow Academy of Music, and his mother, Maria Smolij, was a concert pianist. Smolij began playing the piano at the age of four, and by the time he was six, he was already performing in public. He studied at the Krakow Academy of Music, where he received his Master's degree in piano performance. He also studied conducting with Jerzy Katlewicz and Jacek Kaspszyk. In 1990, Smolij moved to the United States to pursue his career as a conductor. He continued his studies at the University of Southern California, where he received his Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting. During his time at USC, he studied with Daniel Lewis, a renowned conductor and teacher. Smolij's career as a conductor began in 1992 when he was appointed as the Music Director of the Riverside County Philharmonic in California. He held this position for six years and during his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances, including the world premiere of John Williams' "Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra." In 1998, Smolij was appointed as the Music Director of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana. He held this position for ten years and during his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances, including the world premiere of Michael Daugherty's "Route 66." In addition to his work with the Riverside County Philharmonic and the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, Smolij has also conducted numerous other orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Krakow Philharmonic, the Sinfonia Varsovia, and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Yucatan in Mexico. Smolij has also been recognized for his work as a conductor. In 2001, he was awarded the Louisiana Governor's Arts Award for his contributions to the arts in the state. In 2003, he was awarded the Outstanding Conductor Award by the Louisiana Music Educators Association. In addition to his work as a conductor, Smolij is also an accomplished pianist. He has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Krakow Philharmonic, the Riverside County Philharmonic, and the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. Smolij has also recorded several CDs as a pianist, including "Chopin: The Complete Nocturnes," "Chopin: The Complete Mazurkas," and "Chopin: The Complete Waltzes." In recent years, Smolij has continued to conduct and perform as a pianist. He has also become a sought-after guest conductor, and he has conducted orchestras in Europe, Asia, and South America. Overall, Mariusz Smolij is a highly respected and accomplished classical music artist.
