Role:ComposerGenre:ChoralClay Christiansen is a renowned American classical organist and conductor. He was born on August 28, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Christiansen grew up in a musical family, and his father was a choir director. He began playing the piano at the age of five and later started playing the organ at his church. Christiansen attended Brigham Young University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance. He then went on to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he earned a Master of Music degree in organ performance and literature. After completing his studies, Christiansen began his career as a church organist and choir director. He served as the organist and choirmaster at the Cathedral of St. Mark in Salt Lake City from 1974 to 1984. During this time, he also taught organ at the University of Utah. In 1984, Christiansen was appointed as the Tabernacle Organist for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He held this position for 32 years until his retirement in 2016. As the Tabernacle Organist, Christiansen played the iconic Tabernacle organ for the weekly broadcast of the choir's radio and television program, "Music and the Spoken Word." He also accompanied the choir on their tours and recordings. Christiansen has performed as a soloist and conductor with many orchestras and choirs throughout the United States and Europe. He has also been a featured performer at numerous organ festivals and conferences. One of Christiansen's most notable performances was his solo recital at the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in 1986. His performance received critical acclaim and established him as one of the leading organists of his generation. Christiansen has also received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1998, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Brigham Young University. In 2001, he was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the American Guild of Organists. In 2016, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Organ Historical Society. In addition to his performing career, Christiansen is also a respected teacher and mentor. He has taught organ at Brigham Young University, the University of Utah, and the University of Oklahoma. He has also mentored many young organists and conducted masterclasses and workshops throughout the United States. Christiansen is known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the unique qualities of each organ he plays.
