FranceBirth:1711 in FranceDeath:August 16, 1786Period:ClassicalGenre:ChoralJohn Francis Wade was a prominent composer of classical music in the 18th century. He was born in 1711 in England, and little is known about his early life. However, it is believed that he received his musical education at the English College in Douai, France. Wade is best known for his contributions to Christmas music. He is credited with composing the popular Christmas carol "O Come, All Ye Faithful," which is still sung in churches and homes around the world today. Wade's version of the carol was originally written in Latin, and it was titled "Adeste Fideles." Wade's musical career began in the mid-18th century, when he worked as a music teacher in London. He also served as a copyist for various music publishers, and he was known for his skill in transcribing music from one instrument to another. In addition to his work as a music teacher and copyist, Wade also composed music. He wrote a number of hymns and anthems, many of which were performed in churches throughout England. However, it was his Christmas music that would ultimately make him famous. Wade's "Adeste Fideles" was first published in 1760, and it quickly became popular throughout Europe. The carol was translated into English in the 19th century, and it has since been translated into many other languages as well. Wade's other notable works include the hymn "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," which he is believed to have arranged from a melody by Felix Mendelssohn. He also wrote a number of other Christmas carols, including "A Virgin Most Pure" and "The First Nowell." Despite his success as a composer, Wade's personal life remains largely unknown. It is believed that he died in the late 18th century, but the exact date and circumstances of his death are not known. Today, John Francis Wade is remembered as one of the most important composers of Christmas music in history. His contributions to the genre have had a lasting impact, and his music continues to be performed and enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.More....
