Born on May 1, 1953, in Liège, Belgium, Foccroulle grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a composer and conductor, and his mother was a pianist. Foccroulle began playing the piano at a young age and later switched to the organ, which became his primary instrument. Foccroulle studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he received a degree in organ performance. He continued his studies at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where he studied with Marie-Claire Alain, one of the most renowned organists of the 20th century. Foccroulle also studied composition with Jean Langlais and Olivier Messiaen, two of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Foccroulle's career as an organist began in the early 1970s when he was appointed as the organist of the Saint-Jacques-sur-Coudenberg church in Brussels. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented organists of his generation and began performing in concerts throughout Europe and the United States.
