Born on May 14, 1931, in Beuel, Germany, Kontarsky grew up in a family of musicians. His father, a music teacher, introduced him to the world of music at a young age, and he began playing the piano when he was just six years old. Kontarsky's talent for music was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He studied at the Cologne Conservatory, where he received training in piano, composition, and conducting. He also studied with renowned pianists such as Wilhelm Kempff and Edwin Fischer, who helped him refine his skills and develop his unique style. In 1954, Kontarsky made his debut as a pianist, performing at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music. This performance marked the beginning of his career as a performer, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent. He went on to perform at major venues around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Carnegie Hall. Kontarsky was known for his innovative approach to music, and he was particularly interested in contemporary music. He worked closely with many composers, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, and Luciano Berio, and he premiered many of their works. He was also a member of the Stockhausen Ensemble, which was dedicated to performing the works of Karlheinz Stockhausen. In addition to his work as a pianist, Kontarsky was also a conductor and composer. He conducted many orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also composed several works, including a piano concerto and a string quartet. Kontarsky's contributions to the world of music were recognized with many awards and honors. In 1974, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the country's highest honors.
