Born on August 25, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, Arnold grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a music lover who introduced her to classical music at a young age. Arnold began her musical training as a pianist, but she soon discovered her love for singing. She attended Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, where she studied voice with Richard Miller and received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1990. She then went on to earn her Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she studied with Jerold Siena. Arnold's career as a professional singer began in 1994 when she won the prestigious Naumburg International Vocal Competition.
