Born in Germany in 1958, Ostertag showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. Ostertag's musical education began at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, where he studied under the tutelage of Wolfgang Marschner. He later went on to study with renowned violinists such as Nathan Milstein, Henryk Szeryng, and Yehudi Menuhin. These experiences helped him to develop his unique style and approach to music. In 1980, Ostertag won the prestigious International Violin Competition in Hanover, which marked the beginning of his professional career. He went on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of Ostertag's most notable performances was his rendition of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, which he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Claudio Abbado. The performance was widely acclaimed and cemented Ostertag's reputation as one of the world's leading violinists. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Ostertag was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Ostertag-Köhler Quartet, which was known for its innovative interpretations of classical works. The quartet performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States and recorded several critically acclaimed albums. Ostertag's dedication to music was recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the prestigious Prix Jacques Thibaud, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians. He was also awarded the German Record Critics' Award for his recording of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. Despite his success, Ostertag remained committed to his craft and continued to push the boundaries of classical music. He was known for his innovative interpretations of classical works and his willingness to experiment with new techniques and styles. He was also a passionate advocate for music education and worked tirelessly to promote the importance of music in society. Sadly, Ostertag passed away in 2014 at the age of 56.
