Role:ComposerBirth:June 25, 1942 in Mainz, Frankfurt, GermanyGenre:ChamberVolker David Kirchner was a German composer born on September 24, 1942, in Mainz, Germany. He was the son of a musicologist and a pianist, which exposed him to music at a young age. Kirchner began playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the violin and the viola. He studied composition with Wolfgang Fortner at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and later with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Cologne Courses for New Music. Kirchner's early works were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s, but he later developed a more personal style that combined elements of modernism with traditional tonality. His music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and intricate textures. One of Kirchner's most significant works is his opera "Lily's Eyes," which premiered in 1985 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. The opera is based on the novel "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer" by Jennifer Lynch and tells the story of a young woman who is haunted by the memory of her mother's death. The opera was well-received by critics and established Kirchner as a major figure in contemporary opera. Kirchner also composed a number of orchestral works, including his Symphony No. 1, which premiered in 1977. The symphony is a complex and ambitious work that showcases Kirchner's skill as an orchestrator. It features a wide range of textures and colors, from delicate solo passages to thunderous tutti sections. In addition to his orchestral works, Kirchner also composed a number of chamber music pieces, including his String Quartet No. 1, which premiered in 1972. The quartet is a haunting and introspective work that explores themes of loss and mourning. It features a number of extended techniques, such as sul ponticello and col legno, which add to its eerie atmosphere. Kirchner was also a prolific composer of vocal music, including his song cycle "Die Nachtigall," which premiered in 1980. The cycle is based on poems by Rainer Maria Rilke and features Kirchner's signature blend of modernism and tonality. The songs are characterized by their lush harmonies and expressive melodies, which are perfectly suited to Rilke's evocative poetry. Throughout his career, Kirchner received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to contemporary music. In 1992, he was awarded the Johann-Wenzel-Stamitz Prize by the city of Mannheim, and in 2002, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Arts, Berlin. Kirchner continued to compose music until his death on November 4, 2020, in Munich, Germany. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers around the world.More....
