Period:RomanticGenre:ChoralOperaStephen Milling is a Danish bass-baritone who has established himself as one of the leading classical music artists of his generation. Born on August 22, 1969, in Aarhus, Denmark, Milling grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received his diploma in 1995. Milling's career began to take off in the late 1990s, when he won several prestigious singing competitions, including the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in Oslo, Norway, and the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in Wales. These victories brought him to the attention of opera companies and concert halls around the world, and he quickly became in demand as a performer. One of Milling's early breakthrough performances was in 1999, when he sang the role of King Marke in Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Royal Danish Opera. The production was a critical and commercial success, and Milling's performance was widely praised for its depth and emotional power. This led to further engagements at major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Milling's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works by composers from Mozart to Wagner to contemporary composers such as Thomas Adès. He is particularly noted for his interpretations of Wagner's music, and has sung many of the composer's major roles, including Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen, the Dutchman in Der fliegende Holländer, and Gurnemanz in Parsifal. He has also performed in many other operas, including Verdi's Don Carlo, Puccini's Tosca, and Strauss's Elektra. In addition to his opera work, Milling is also a highly sought-after concert performer. He has sung with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, and Riccardo Muti. Milling has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to his competition victories, he has been awarded the Danish Music Critics' Prize, the Wilhelm Hansen Foundation's Music Prize, and the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He has also been made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors. Despite his many accomplishments, Milling remains committed to his craft and continues to seek out new challenges and opportunities. He is known for his dedication to his art and his willingness to take risks in his performances, always striving to bring new insights and interpretations to the music he sings. With his powerful voice, commanding stage presence, and deep musicality, Stephen Milling is truly one of the great classical music artists of our time.More....
