Founded in 1960, the orchestra has established itself as one of the leading chamber orchestras in Europe, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The WKO was founded by Jörg Faerber, a German conductor and violinist. Faerber had previously served as the concertmaster of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and was eager to create his own ensemble. He assembled a group of talented musicians from the Stuttgart area and began rehearsing in a small church in Heilbronn. The orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. In addition to performing traditional classical repertoire, the WKO also commissioned new works from contemporary composers and explored lesser-known works from the Baroque and Classical periods. Over the years, the WKO has had many talented musicians pass through its ranks. Some of the most notable members include violinist and concertmaster Rainer Kussmaul, cellist Anner Bylsma, and oboist Heinz Holliger. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the highlights of the WKO's early years was its participation in the 1964 International Bach Competition in Leipzig. The orchestra performed Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and was awarded first prize in the chamber orchestra category. This early success helped to establish the WKO as a major force in the classical music world. In the decades that followed, the WKO continued to build its reputation through a series of acclaimed recordings and performances. The orchestra has recorded over 100 albums, including complete cycles of the symphonies of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. The WKO has also performed at many of the world's leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. One of the WKO's most notable achievements was its performance of the complete cycle of Mozart's piano concertos with pianist Christian Zacharias. The cycle was performed over the course of several years and was widely praised for its exceptional musicianship and insightful interpretations. In addition to its regular concert schedule, the WKO has also been involved in a number of educational and outreach programs. The orchestra has worked with young musicians through its WKO Academy, which provides training and performance opportunities for talented young musicians. The WKO has also collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. Over the years, the WKO has received many awards and honors for its contributions to the classical music world. In 2006, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Mozart's piano concertos with Christian Zacharias. The WKO has also been awarded the German Record Critics' Award and the Diapason d'Or. Today, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra continues to be a leading force in the classical music world. Under the leadership of conductor Ruben Gazarian, the orchestra remains committed to its tradition of exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. With a rich history and a bright future, the WKO is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.More....
