He then went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he was a student of William Kincaid. Kincaid was a legendary flutist who had a profound influence on Baker's playing style. After completing his studies, Baker joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as its principal flutist. He held this position for six years before joining the New York Philharmonic in 1949. Baker remained with the New York Philharmonic for 18 years, during which time he became one of the most respected and sought-after flutists in the world. Baker's playing was characterized by its clarity, precision, and beauty of tone. He was known for his ability to play with great speed and agility, as well as his ability to produce a wide range of colors and dynamics.
