GermanyBirth:in Frankenberg, GermanyAlexander Schneider was a renowned classical music artist who made significant contributions to the world of music as a violinist, conductor, and chamber musician. He was born on October 21, 1908, in Vilna, Lithuania, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Schneider's family was Jewish, and he grew up in a musical household where his father played the violin and his mother sang. Schneider began playing the violin at the age of eight and showed exceptional talent from an early age. He received his first formal training at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he studied with Mieczysław Michałowicz. In 1924, Schneider moved to Berlin to study with the renowned violinist and pedagogue Carl Flesch. He also studied chamber music with the pianist Artur Schnabel and the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. In 1928, Schneider made his debut as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto. He quickly established himself as one of the leading violinists of his generation, known for his impeccable technique, musical sensitivity, and deep understanding of the repertoire. In the 1930s, Schneider became a member of the Budapest String Quartet, one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of the time. The quartet, which also included Joseph Roisman, Boris Kroyt, and Mischa Schneider (no relation), performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, earning critical acclaim for their interpretations of the classical and Romantic repertoire. During World War II, Schneider served in the United States Army, where he played in the army band and gave concerts for the troops. After the war, he resumed his career as a soloist and chamber musician, performing with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. In addition to his work as a performer, Schneider was also a respected conductor and teacher. He founded the Schneider Quartet in 1955, which performed and recorded extensively throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He also served as the music director of the New York String Orchestra, which he founded in 1969. Schneider was known for his commitment to contemporary music and premiered works by many leading composers of the 20th century, including Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, and Elliott Carter. He was also a champion of the music of his fellow Lithuanian, the composer and conductor Vytautas Bacevičius. Throughout his career, Schneider received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1963, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President John F. Kennedy. He was also a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 1988. Schneider continued to perform and teach well into his later years, and he remained an influential figure in the world of classical music until his death on February 2, 1993, in New York City. His legacy lives on through his recordings, which continue to be admired for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity, and through the many musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his long and illustrious career.More....
