The Estonian State Symphony Orchestra (ESSO) is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Tallinn, Estonia. The orchestra was founded in 1926 as the State Broadcasting Orchestra, and it has since become one of the most respected orchestras in the Baltic region. The ESSO has a rich history of performances and achievements. In the early years of its existence, the orchestra was primarily focused on performing works by Estonian composers, such as Eduard Tubin and Arvo Pärt. However, over time, the orchestra expanded its repertoire to include works by international composers, such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. One of the highlights of the ESSO's early years was its performance at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, where the orchestra played the Estonian national anthem. The orchestra also performed at the 1956 World Youth Festival in Moscow, where it received critical acclaim for its performance of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. In the 1970s and 1980s, the ESSO continued to gain international recognition for its performances. The orchestra toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, performing in prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. In 1987, the ESSO was invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, where it received a standing ovation for its performance of Sibelius's Symphony No. 2. In the 1990s, the ESSO underwent a period of transition as Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union. The orchestra was renamed the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and it began to focus more on contemporary music. The orchestra also began to collaborate with international soloists and conductors, such as Neeme Järvi and Paavo Järvi. In recent years, the ESSO has continued to build on its legacy of excellence. The orchestra has performed at major festivals and venues around the world, including the BBC Proms in London and the Berlin Philharmonic. The ESSO has also recorded numerous albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. Throughout its history, the ESSO has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2004, the orchestra was awarded the Order of the White Star, one of Estonia's highest honors. The ESSO has also been recognized for its contributions to Estonian culture, receiving the Estonian Cultural Endowment's Annual Award in 2010. Today, the ESSO continues to be a leading force in the world of classical music. The orchestra's commitment to excellence and innovation has made it a beloved institution in Estonia and a respected ambassador of Estonian culture around the world.
