The quintet was formed in 1988 by five members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of wind quintets. The founding members of the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet were Michael Hasel (flute), Andreas Wittmann (oboe), Walter Seyfarth (clarinet), Fergus McWilliam (horn), and Henning Trog (bassoon). All five musicians were accomplished soloists and orchestral players, and they quickly established themselves as one of the leading wind quintets in the world. The quintet's early performances were met with critical acclaim, and they soon began to receive invitations to perform at major music festivals and concert halls around the world. In 1990, they made their debut at the Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. This performance was a major milestone for the quintet, and it helped to establish their reputation as one of the leading chamber ensembles of their generation. Over the years, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. They have also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors and soloists, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Yo-Yo Ma. One of the quintet's most notable performances was their 1998 concert at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, which was broadcast live on television and radio throughout Europe. This performance was a major success, and it helped to cement the quintet's reputation as one of the leading chamber ensembles of their generation. In addition to their live performances, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet has also recorded extensively. They have released over 20 albums, which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. Some of their most notable recordings include their 1991 album of Mozart's wind quintets, their 2003 album of French music for wind quintet, and their 2010 album of music by Carl Nielsen. The Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1991, they were awarded the Echo Klassik Award for their recording of Mozart's wind quintets. They have also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Despite their many achievements, the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet remains committed to exploring new repertoire and pushing the boundaries of the wind quintet genre.
