"Adiós Nonino" is a tango composition by the Argentine composer and bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla. It was composed in 1959 as a tribute to his father, Vicente "Nonino" Piazzolla, who had recently passed away. The piece was premiered in Buenos Aires in 1960 and has since become one of Piazzolla's most famous works. "Adiós Nonino" is a single-movement piece that lasts approximately six minutes. It is written in a slow, mournful tempo and is characterized by its use of dissonant harmonies and chromaticism. The piece begins with a solo bandoneón melody that is later joined by a string orchestra. The melody is then passed between the bandoneón and the orchestra, creating a sense of dialogue between the two. The middle section of the piece features a more upbeat, rhythmic section that is reminiscent of traditional tango music. This section is characterized by its use of syncopated rhythms and driving bass lines. The piece then returns to its mournful opening melody, which is played with even greater intensity and emotion. "Adiós Nonino" is often considered to be one of Piazzolla's most personal and emotional works. Its use of dissonance and chromaticism reflects the composer's desire to break away from traditional tango music and create a more modern, expressive style. The piece has been performed and recorded by numerous musicians and orchestras around the world and has become a staple of the tango repertoire.
