Astoria is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2002 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming and dynamic performances. The founding members of Astoria were violinist David Chan, violist Max Mandel, cellist Saeunn Thorsteinsdottir, and pianist Pedja Muzijevic. All four musicians had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form Astoria. From the beginning, Astoria set out to explore the rich and diverse repertoire of chamber music, from the Baroque era to the present day. The ensemble's programming often features lesser-known works alongside more familiar pieces, and the musicians are known for their adventurous and imaginative interpretations. Over the years, Astoria has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. One of Astoria's most notable achievements was its performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011. The cycle, which was performed over the course of six concerts, was hailed as a triumph of musicianship and interpretation. Astoria has also been recognized for its recordings, which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. The ensemble's debut album, featuring works by Schumann and Brahms, was named one of the best classical recordings of 2004 by The New York Times. Subsequent recordings, including a disc of works by Dvorak and a collection of American music, have also been widely praised. Throughout its history, Astoria has remained committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians and audiences. The ensemble has collaborated with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to underserved communities, and has also mentored young musicians through its residency programs. Today, Astoria continues to be one of the most exciting and innovative ensembles in the world of classical music. With its commitment to excellence, creativity, and community engagement, the ensemble is sure to inspire and delight audiences for many years to come.
