The libretto was written by Nicola Francesco Haym, based on the play Pertharite, roi des Lombards by Pierre Corneille. The plot of Rodelinda revolves around the political and personal struggles of the Lombard king Bertarido, who has been deposed by his own brother Grimoaldo. Bertarido's wife Rodelinda, who believes her husband to be dead, is courted by Grimoaldo, who hopes to marry her and legitimize his claim to the throne. Meanwhile, Bertarido has secretly returned to Milan and is plotting to regain his throne and reunite with his wife and son.
