Arvo Pärt's Symphony No. 3, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, is a three-movement work for string orchestra and soprano soloist. It was composed in 1971 and premiered in Tallinn, Estonia in 1972. The first movement, Lento - Sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile, is based on a Polish folk song about a mother searching for her son who was taken away by the Germans during World War II. The music is slow and mournful, with the strings playing long, sustained notes and the soprano singing in a haunting, ethereal style. The second movement, Lento e largo - Tranquillissimo, is based on a prayer written on the wall of a Gestapo cell by a young girl during the war. The music is slow and spacious, with the strings playing long, sustained chords and the soprano singing in a simple, chant-like style. The third movement, Lento - Cantabile-semplice, is based on a folk song from Silesia about a mother mourning the loss of her child. The music is slow and lyrical, with the strings playing a simple, repetitive melody and the soprano singing in a gentle, soothing style. Overall, Symphony No. 3 is characterized by its simplicity, clarity, and emotional depth. Pärt's use of minimalism and tonality creates a sense of timelessness and universality, allowing the music to speak to the human experience of loss and grief. The work has become one of Pärt's most famous and beloved compositions, and has been performed and recorded by orchestras and soloists around the world.
