Marin Marais was a French composer and viol player who lived from 1656 to 1728. He was a prominent figure in the French Baroque music scene and was known for his compositions for the viola da gamba. One of his most famous works is the "Couplets de folies, for flute & continuo." The "Couplets de folies" was composed in 1695 and premiered in Paris. It is a set of variations on a popular dance tune called "La Folia," which originated in Portugal in the 16th century. The "La Folia" tune was widely used in Baroque music and was a popular theme for variations. The "Couplets de folies" consists of 32 variations on the "La Folia" theme, divided into two parts. The first part contains 16 variations, while the second part contains 15 variations and a final coda. The variations are written for flute and continuo, which typically consists of a harpsichord or organ and a bass instrument such as a cello or viola da gamba. The "Couplets de folies" is characterized by its virtuosic flute writing and intricate variations. Marais employs a variety of techniques to create interest and variety in the variations, including changes in rhythm, harmony, and texture. Some variations are fast and lively, while others are slow and expressive. The final variation is particularly impressive, featuring rapid runs and trills in the flute part. Overall, the "Couplets de folies" is a masterful example of Baroque variation form and showcases Marais's skill as a composer and his understanding of the flute as a solo instrument. It remains a popular work in the flute repertoire and is frequently performed and recorded today.
