The Cavatina Duo is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2002 by Spanish flutist Eugenia Moliner and Bosnian guitarist Denis Azabagic. The duo has gained international recognition for their unique and dynamic performances, which showcase their virtuosic playing and innovative programming. Eugenia Moliner was born in Valencia, Spain, and began playing the flute at the age of eight. She went on to study at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia and later at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. Denis Azabagic was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina and began playing the guitar at the age of seven. He studied at the Academy of Music in Sarajevo and later at the Roosevelt University in Chicago. The duo first met in 1996 while studying at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and began performing together regularly. In 2002, they officially formed the Cavatina Duo and began touring extensively throughout the United States and Europe. One of the duo's early highlights was their performance at the 2003 National Flute Association Convention in Las Vegas, where they received a standing ovation for their performance of Astor Piazzolla's "Histoire du Tango." The duo's unique blend of classical and world music influences quickly gained them a following, and they began to receive invitations to perform at major concert halls and festivals around the world. In 2005, the duo released their debut album, "Cavatina," which featured works by composers such as Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz, and Astor Piazzolla. The album received critical acclaim and helped to establish the duo as one of the leading chamber music ensembles of their generation. Over the years, the Cavatina Duo has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, incorporating elements of jazz, folk, and world music into their performances. They have collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Lincoln Trio. In 2011, the duo released their second album, "Sephardic Journey," which featured traditional Sephardic music from Spain, Turkey, and the Balkans. The album was a departure from their previous work and showcased the duo's versatility and range as musicians. The duo's performances have been praised for their technical precision, expressive playing, and engaging stage presence. They have received numerous awards and accolades, including the 2009 National Flute Association Chamber Music Competition and the 2010 Guitar Foundation of America International Chamber Music Competition. In addition to their performing career, Moliner and Azabagic are both dedicated teachers and have given masterclasses and workshops at universities and music schools around the world. They are also committed to promoting new music and have commissioned and premiered works by composers such as Clarice Assad, Sergio Assad, and Alan Thomas. Today, the Cavatina Duo continues to tour and perform regularly, delighting audiences with their innovative and captivating performances. They have released several more albums, including "Infusion" in 2013 and "Cavatina at the Opera" in 2018. Their music continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world, and they remain one of the most exciting and dynamic chamber music ensembles of their generation.
