Polifemo is an opera seria composed by Nicola Porpora in 1735. The libretto was written by Paolo Antonio Rolli and is based on the story of Polyphemus from Homer's Odyssey. The opera premiered on January 30, 1735, at the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo in Venice. The plot of Polifemo revolves around the cyclops Polyphemus, who falls in love with the nymph Galatea. However, she is in love with the shepherd Acis. Polyphemus becomes jealous and kills Acis with a boulder. Galatea transforms Acis into a river spirit, and Polyphemus is left alone and heartbroken. The opera is divided into three acts and features arias, recitatives, and choruses. The music is characterized by Porpora's virtuosic vocal writing, with elaborate coloratura passages and expressive melodies. The orchestration is also notable, with the use of horns, trumpets, and timpani to create dramatic effects. The first movement of the opera features a lively overture, followed by a chorus of nymphs and shepherds. The second movement introduces Polyphemus, who sings an aria expressing his love for Galatea. Galatea then enters and sings an aria about her love for Acis. The third movement features a duet between Galatea and Acis, followed by a chorus of shepherds. The second act begins with a chorus of cyclops, followed by an aria by Polyphemus expressing his jealousy. Galatea then sings an aria about her fear of Polyphemus, and Acis sings an aria about his love for Galatea. The act ends with a trio between Galatea, Acis, and Polyphemus. The final act features the death of Acis and the transformation of Galatea. The act begins with a chorus of nymphs mourning Acis's death. Galatea then sings an aria about her grief, followed by an aria by Polyphemus expressing his remorse. The opera ends with a chorus of shepherds and nymphs celebrating the transformation of Acis into a river spirit. Overall, Polifemo is a masterpiece of Baroque opera, showcasing Porpora's skill as a composer and his ability to create dramatic and expressive music. Its premiere in Venice was a great success, and the opera continued to be performed throughout Europe in the following years.
