Franz Schubert's Impromptu for piano in G flat major, D. 899/3, Op. 90/3, is a solo piano piece composed in 1827. It was premiered posthumously in 1839, along with the other three impromptus of Op. 90, by the pianist Franz Liszt. The piece is in ternary form, with a lyrical A section in G flat major and a contrasting B section in E flat minor. The A section features a flowing melody in the right hand accompanied by arpeggiated chords in the left hand, creating a sense of gentle motion. The B section, by contrast, is more dramatic and intense, with a descending chromatic melody in the right hand and a pulsing accompaniment in the left hand. The piece returns to the A section, but with some variations and embellishments, before coming to a gentle close. The overall mood of the piece is one of introspection and melancholy, with moments of drama and tension. Schubert's Impromptu in G flat major is characteristic of his style, with its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and use of arpeggios and other keyboard figurations. It is a popular piece in the piano repertoire, and has been recorded by many notable pianists.
