Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 13 is the first symphony composed by the Russian composer Sergey Rachmaninov. It was composed between 1895 and 1897, when Rachmaninov was only 22 years old. The symphony premiered on March 27, 1897, in St. Petersburg, conducted by Alexander Glazunov. The symphony consists of four movements: 1. Grave - Allegro ma non troppo 2. Allegro animato 3. Larghetto 4. Allegro con fuoco The first movement, Grave - Allegro ma non troppo, begins with a slow and somber introduction, featuring a mournful melody played by the cellos and basses. This leads into the main Allegro section, which is characterized by its driving rhythms and powerful brass fanfares. The movement is notable for its use of a recurring four-note motif, which appears throughout the symphony. The second movement, Allegro animato, is a lively scherzo in 6/8 time. It features a playful and energetic main theme, which is contrasted with a more lyrical secondary theme. The movement is notable for its use of pizzicato strings and woodwind trills. The third movement, Larghetto, is a slow and melancholy adagio. It features a beautiful and expressive melody played by the strings, which is later taken up by the woodwinds. The movement builds to a powerful climax before subsiding into a quiet and reflective coda. The final movement, Allegro con fuoco, is a fiery and dramatic finale. It begins with a fast and frenzied introduction, featuring rapid string runs and thunderous timpani rolls. The main theme is a triumphant and heroic melody played by the brass, which is developed throughout the movement. The symphony ends with a thrilling coda, featuring a final statement of the four-note motif from the first movement. Overall, Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 13 is a powerful and emotional work, showcasing Rachmaninov's gift for melody and his skill as an orchestrator. Despite its initial critical reception, which was largely negative, the symphony has since become a beloved part of the orchestral repertoire.
