He was born into a family of musicians, with his father, Leonid Kogan, being a famous violinist, and his mother, Elizaveta Gilels, being a pianist. Pavel Kogan started playing the violin at the age of six, and by the time he was ten, he had already made his debut as a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Kogan studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where he was taught by some of the most prominent musicians of the time, including Yuri Yankelevich, David Oistrakh, and Lev Vlasenko. He graduated from the conservatory in 1976, and soon after, he started his career as a soloist and conductor. In 1989, Kogan founded the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, which he has been leading as the artistic director and principal conductor ever since. Under his leadership, the orchestra has become one of the most respected and acclaimed orchestras in Russia, performing regularly at major concert halls and festivals around the world. Kogan has also been a guest conductor with many other orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has collaborated with some of the most famous soloists of our time, including Maxim Vengerov, Yo-Yo Ma, and Lang Lang. As a soloist, Kogan has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also recorded extensively, with over 30 albums to his name, including recordings of the complete works of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Kogan has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the State Prize of the Russian Federation, the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, and the Order of Friendship. He has also been awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in Russia. In addition to his work as a conductor and soloist, Kogan is also a dedicated teacher, and he has taught at the Moscow Conservatory since 1986.
