"Song for Athene" is a choral work composed by John Tavener in 1993. It was written in memory of a family friend, Athene Hariades, who died in a cycling accident. The piece was premiered at her funeral in London in the same year. The work is divided into three movements, each with its own distinct character. The first movement is a setting of the Orthodox funeral hymn "Alleluia, Behold the Bridegroom," sung in Greek. The second movement is a setting of Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Act V, Scene 1, spoken by the priest at the funeral. The third movement is a setting of the Orthodox funeral hymn "Eternal Memory," sung in English. The piece is characterized by its use of slow, mournful melodies and rich harmonies. Tavener employs a variety of vocal techniques, including chant-like singing, whispering, and spoken word. The work is scored for a cappella choir, with occasional use of handbells and cymbals. "Song for Athene" has become one of Tavener's most popular works, and has been performed at numerous funerals and memorial services around the world. Its haunting beauty and spiritual depth have made it a favorite among both performers and audiences.
