Erismena is an opera in three acts composed by Francesco Cavalli. The opera was first performed in Venice in 1655. The libretto was written by Aurelio Aureli, and the story is set in ancient Persia. The plot revolves around the love triangle between Erismena, Idraspe, and Aldimira. Act I begins with Erismena disguised as a man named Ermino, searching for her lover Idraspe, who has been captured by the Persian king, Orimeno. Erismena meets Aldimira, who is in love with Idraspe, and the two become friends. Meanwhile, Idraspe is being held captive by Orimeno, who is also in love with Aldimira. Orimeno's advisor, Erimante, suggests that Orimeno marry Aldimira to secure his power, but Orimeno is hesitant because he is in love with her. In Act II, Erismena reveals her true identity to Aldimira and confesses her love for Idraspe. Aldimira is heartbroken but agrees to help Erismena rescue Idraspe. Orimeno, still in love with Aldimira, decides to marry her but is interrupted by the arrival of Erismena and Aldimira, who have disguised themselves as dancers. Erismena and Idraspe are reunited, and Orimeno is left alone and heartbroken. Act III begins with Orimeno plotting his revenge against Erismena and Idraspe. He orders Erimante to poison Erismena, but Erimante has a change of heart and warns Erismena instead. Erismena and Idraspe decide to leave Persia and start a new life together. Aldimira, still in love with Idraspe, decides to join them on their journey. Erismena is known for its complex plot, intricate vocal writing, and use of dance music. The opera features a variety of musical styles, including recitative, aria, and ensemble numbers. The score also includes several instrumental interludes and dance movements, which were a popular feature of Venetian opera at the time. Overall, Erismena is a compelling opera that explores themes of love, loyalty, and betrayal. Its memorable characters, intricate plot, and beautiful music have made it a beloved work of the Baroque era.
