He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. From a young age, Wehofschitz showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Wehofschitz's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began studying piano at the Vienna Academy of Music when he was just six years old. He quickly became known for his exceptional talent and was soon performing in public concerts. In 1943, Wehofschitz was drafted into the German army during World War II. He was stationed in Italy, where he continued to play the piano and perform for his fellow soldiers. After the war ended, Wehofschitz returned to Vienna and resumed his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1948, Wehofschitz won first prize in the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. Throughout his career, Wehofschitz was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. Wehofschitz continued to perform and record music throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In 1978, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, which was another major honor in recognition of his contributions to the world of classical music.
