Ingeborg Hallstein was a German soprano who was born on May 23, 1936, in Munich, Germany. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a conductor and her mother was a singer, so it was no surprise that Ingeborg developed a love for music at a young age. Ingeborg began her musical training at the age of six, studying piano and violin. She later switched to voice and began studying with the renowned soprano Maria Ivogün. In 1955, she made her debut as Barbarina in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Ingeborg quickly gained recognition for her beautiful voice and her ability to portray a wide range of characters on stage. She became a regular performer at the Bavarian State Opera and also appeared in productions at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, and the Royal Opera House in London. One of Ingeborg's most memorable performances was in the title role of Richard Strauss's "Salome" at the Salzburg Festival in 1961. Her performance was praised for its intensity and dramatic power, and it helped establish her as one of the leading sopranos of her generation. In addition to her work on the opera stage, Ingeborg was also a popular concert singer. She performed regularly with orchestras throughout Europe and recorded a number of albums of classical music. She was particularly known for her interpretations of Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner. Throughout her career, Ingeborg received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1963, she was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit, and in 1970 she was named a Kammersängerin by the Bavarian State Opera. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1976. Ingeborg continued to perform well into her later years, and she remained a beloved figure in the world of classical music. She passed away on February 12, 2021, at the age of 84.
