The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Choir, also known as the Coral Paulistano, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in São Paulo, Brazil. Founded in 1936, the choir has a rich history of performing choral works from various periods and styles, ranging from Renaissance to contemporary music. The choir was established by the São Paulo State Government as part of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), which was founded in 1954. The choir's main purpose was to provide vocal support for the orchestra's performances, as well as to promote choral music in Brazil. Over the years, the choir has become an integral part of the OSESP, performing in numerous concerts and recordings. The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Choir is composed of around 120 singers, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The choir's members come from different backgrounds and professions, but they all share a passion for choral music. The choir is led by a team of experienced conductors, including Naomi Munakata, who served as the choir's artistic director from 1995 to 2013. One of the highlights of the choir's history was its participation in the opening ceremony of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which was held in São Paulo. The choir performed the Brazilian national anthem, "Hino Nacional Brasileiro," in front of a global audience of millions. The performance was widely praised for its emotional power and musical excellence. The choir has also performed in numerous concerts and festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. In 2012, the choir performed in the United States for the first time, in a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The concert, which featured works by Brazilian composers, was a critical and commercial success. The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Choir has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2009, the choir won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Album, for its recording of Villa-Lobos' "Choral Works." The choir has also been recognized for its contributions to Brazilian culture, receiving the Order of Cultural Merit from the Brazilian government in 2010. In addition to its performances with the OSESP, the choir has also collaborated with other orchestras and ensembles, both in Brazil and abroad. The choir has worked with renowned conductors such as John Neschling, Marin Alsop, and Sir Simon Rattle, and has performed with soloists such as Plácido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, and Lang Lang. The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra Choir continues to be a leading force in the world of choral music, both in Brazil and internationally. With its commitment to excellence and its passion for music, the choir has become a beloved institution in São Paulo and a source of pride for the Brazilian people.
