He was born on June 17, 1922, in Offenbach am Main, Germany. Smola was the son of a conductor and composer, and he grew up in a musical family. His father, Franz Smola, was the conductor of the Offenbach Municipal Orchestra, and his mother, Maria Smola, was a pianist. Smola began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin. He later attended the Frankfurt Conservatory, where he studied conducting and composition. After completing his studies, Smola began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in Germany. In 1952, Smola was appointed as the conductor of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR). He held this position for over 30 years, during which time he established the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in Europe. Under his leadership, the SWR performed at major music festivals and concert halls around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and Carnegie Hall. Smola was known for his innovative programming, which often included contemporary music alongside classical repertoire. He was also a champion of young musicians, and he frequently invited emerging artists to perform with the SWR. Many of these musicians went on to have successful careers in the music industry. In addition to his work with the SWR, Smola was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 200 albums, many of which received critical acclaim. His recordings of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart are particularly noteworthy. Smola received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1972, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1982. In 1992, he received the German Record Critics' Award for his recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Smola retired from his position as conductor of the SWR in 1985. However, he continued to be active in the music industry, serving as a guest conductor and recording artist. He also established the Emmerich Smola Foundation, which provides support for young musicians and promotes classical music education. Emmerich Smola passed away on January 27, 2011, at the age of 88.
