Liliane Berton was a French soprano who was born on October 21, 1924, in Paris, France. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a pianist and her mother was a singer, so it was no surprise that Liliane showed an interest in music at a young age. Liliane began her musical training at the Paris Conservatory, where she studied under the tutelage of Germaine Lubin. She made her debut in 1947 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where she played the role of Micaëla in Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. This performance was a huge success and marked the beginning of Liliane's career as a professional opera singer. Over the next few years, Liliane continued to perform in various operas and concerts throughout France. In 1950, she made her debut at the Paris Opera, where she played the role of the Countess in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro. This performance was also a huge success and helped to establish Liliane as one of the leading sopranos in France. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Liliane continued to perform in various operas and concerts throughout Europe. She was particularly well-known for her performances of French opera, including works by composers such as Jules Massenet, Charles Gounod, and Georges Bizet. She also performed in several operas by Mozart, including The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni. One of the highlights of Liliane's career came in 1958, when she performed the role of Marguerite in Charles Gounod's opera Faust at the Royal Opera House in London. This performance was a huge success and helped to establish Liliane as an international opera star. In addition to her work in opera, Liliane also performed in concerts and recitals throughout her career. She was particularly well-known for her performances of French art songs, including works by composers such as Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy. Throughout her career, Liliane received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1961, she was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for her recording of Jules Massenet's opera Manon. She was also awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, one of France's highest honors, in recognition of her contributions to French culture. Liliane continued to perform throughout the 1970s and 1980s, although she began to scale back her performances as she got older. She retired from the stage in the early 1990s and spent her later years teaching voice at the Paris Conservatory. Liliane Berton passed away on November 28, 2014, at the age of 90. She was remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of her generation and a true ambassador of French culture. Her contributions to classical music will be remembered for generations to come.
