Richard Angas was a renowned British bass-baritone opera singer, known for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence. Born on August 22, 1942, in Durham, England, Angas grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He attended Durham School and later studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Angas made his professional debut in 1966 with the English Opera Group, performing in Benjamin Britten's opera "The Rape of Lucretia." He quickly established himself as a versatile performer, equally at home in comic and serious roles. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading opera companies, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the English National Opera, and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. One of Angas's most memorable performances was in the role of the Pirate King in Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance." He first played the role in 1978 with the English National Opera and went on to perform it many times throughout his career. His portrayal of the Pirate King was praised for its humor and energy, and he became known as one of the greatest interpreters of the role. Angas also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Handel's oratorios, including "Messiah" and "Judas Maccabaeus." His rich, resonant voice and impeccable technique made him a favorite among audiences and critics alike. Throughout his career, Angas received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1997, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music. Angas continued to perform well into his seventies, and his final performance was in 2013, in the role of the Mikado in Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado." He passed away on July 20, 2013, at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest bass-baritone opera singers of his generation.
