The Pilgrim's Progress is an opera composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams, with a libretto by the composer himself, based on John Bunyan's allegorical novel of the same name. The opera was composed between 1949 and 1951 and premiered on April 26, 1951, at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. The opera is divided into two acts, each with several scenes. The first act follows the journey of the protagonist, Christian, as he sets out from the City of Destruction to reach the Celestial City. Along the way, he encounters various obstacles and temptations, including the Slough of Despond, the Hill Difficulty, and the Valley of the Shadow of Death. He also meets several characters who help him on his journey, including Evangelist, Faithful, and Hopeful. The second act follows the journey of Christian's wife, Christiana, and their children as they set out on their own pilgrimage to the Celestial City. They encounter many of the same obstacles and temptations as Christian, but also face additional challenges, such as the Enchanted Ground and the Flatterer. They are also joined by several new characters, including Mercy and Greatheart. The music of The Pilgrim's Progress is characterized by Vaughan Williams' use of folk melodies and hymns, which he weaves into the score to create a sense of timelessness and universality. The opera also features several choral numbers, including the famous "He who would valiant be," which has become a staple of Anglican hymnody. Despite its initial success, The Pilgrim's Progress has not entered the standard operatic repertoire, in part due to its heavy reliance on spoken dialogue and its episodic structure. However, it remains a beloved work among Vaughan Williams' fans and is occasionally performed in concert or in semi-staged productions.
