Born on August 22, 1812, in Basel, Switzerland, Guhl was the son of a prominent physician and a talented pianist. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Guhl's musical talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly became known for his exceptional skills on the piano. He began performing in public at the age of nine and soon gained a reputation as a prodigy. In 1824, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer Friedrich Kalkbrenner. After completing his studies in Paris, Guhl returned to Switzerland and began performing extensively throughout Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation, and his performances were highly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. In 1836, Guhl was appointed as the director of the Basel Music Academy, a position he held for over 30 years. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to promote classical music and to train the next generation of musicians. He also continued to perform extensively, both as a soloist and as a member of various ensembles. One of the highlights of Guhl's career was his performance at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London.
