Sunhae Im is a renowned South Korean soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born on August 28, 1976, in Seoul, South Korea, Im showed an early interest in music and began studying piano at the age of five. However, it was not until she was in high school that she discovered her love for singing and decided to pursue a career in music. Im went on to study at the Seoul National University, where she earned a degree in vocal performance. She then moved to Germany to continue her studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, where she studied under the tutelage of soprano Renate Behle. During her time in Germany, Im also participated in masterclasses with renowned singers such as Edith Wiens and Peter Schreier. Im's career as a professional opera singer began in 2001 when she made her debut at the Hamburg State Opera as Barbarina in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." She quickly gained recognition for her powerful voice and expressive performances, and soon began receiving invitations to perform at major opera houses and music festivals around the world. One of Im's most notable performances was her portrayal of the role of Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Salzburg Festival in 2006. Her performance was widely praised by critics, who noted her "sparkling soprano" and "charming stage presence." Im has since returned to the Salzburg Festival on several occasions, performing in productions of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and "La Clemenza di Tito." Im has also performed at other major opera houses around the world, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She has worked with some of the most renowned conductors in the world, including Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In addition to her work in opera, Im is also a sought-after concert singer. She has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also performed at major music festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms. Im's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works by composers from the Baroque era to the present day. She is particularly known for her interpretations of Mozart's music, but has also performed works by Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, and many others. Im's talent and hard work have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2004, she was awarded the prestigious German Music Critics' Award for her performance in Handel's "Giulio Cesare" at the Hamburg State Opera. She has also been awarded the Mozart Prize by the Mozart Society of Japan and the Korean National Opera Award. Despite her many accomplishments, Im remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to work tirelessly to perfect her performances and bring joy to audiences around the world.
