Born on March 27, 1948, in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey, Wales, Bennett grew up in a musical family. Her father, William Mathias, was a composer and conductor, and her mother, Menna, was a singer. Bennett's parents recognized her musical talent at an early age and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Bennett began playing the harp at the age of eight and quickly showed promise. She studied with renowned harpists such as Osian Ellis and Marisa Robles and went on to attend the Royal Academy of Music in London. After completing her studies, Bennett embarked on a successful career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. One of Bennett's most significant achievements was her appointment as the official harpist to the Prince of Wales in 1980. She held this position for over 20 years and performed at numerous royal events, including the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Bennett's performances were highly praised, and she became a well-respected figure in the classical music world. In addition to her work as a soloist and royal harpist, Bennett was also a dedicated music educator. She taught at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and was the founder and director of the Wales International Harp Festival. Throughout her career, Bennett received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the classical music world. In 1998, she was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for her services to music, and in 2010, she was awarded the Glyndŵr Award for an Outstanding Contribution to the Arts in Wales. Bennett was also a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and a member of the Gorsedd of Bards. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the music of her father, William Mathias, and her performances of Welsh music.
