Albert Heinrich Zabel was a German composer, harpist, and conductor who lived from 1834 to 1910. He was born in Berlin, Germany, and showed an early interest in music. His father was a musician, and Zabel began studying the harp at a young age. He also studied composition with the famous composer and conductor Felix Mendelssohn. Zabel's musical career began in earnest when he joined the Berlin Opera Orchestra as a harpist. He quickly became known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to improvise on the harp. He also began composing his own music, and his first published work was a set of variations for harp and piano. In 1869, Zabel was appointed conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He held this position for several years, during which time he conducted many of his own compositions as well as works by other composers. He also continued to perform as a harpist, both as a soloist and as a member of various ensembles. Zabel's music is characterized by its Romantic style and its use of the harp as a solo instrument. He wrote many works for harp, including solo pieces, chamber music, and concertos. His most famous work is probably his Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, which is still performed today. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Zabel was also a teacher. He taught at the Berlin Conservatory and at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. Many of his students went on to become successful musicians in their own right. Zabel's life was not without its challenges. He suffered from poor health for much of his life, and he also experienced financial difficulties. However, he remained dedicated to his music and continued to compose and perform until his death in 1910. Today, Zabel is remembered as one of the most important composers for the harp. His music continues to be performed and recorded, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary harpists.
