Artist Info
Period:ClassicalRomanticModernGenre:ChoralOperaPeter Lagger was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 15, 1950, in Vienna, Austria. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Lagger was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Lagger's talent was evident from an early age, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He quickly gained a reputation as a prodigy and was invited to perform at various concerts and events. At the age of ten, he made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. Lagger continued to study music throughout his childhood and adolescence, attending the Vienna Conservatory and later the Salzburg Mozarteum. He studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers of the time, including Friedrich Gulda and Martha Argerich. In 1970, Lagger won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a major turning point in his career, as it brought him international recognition and led to numerous performance opportunities. He went on to win several other prestigious awards, including the Chopin Prize in Warsaw, Poland, and the Tchaikovsky Prize in Moscow, Russia. Throughout his career, Lagger was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. Lagger performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, playing with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also performed at numerous music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Ravinia Festival. One of Lagger's most memorable performances was his 1987 performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance was particularly significant because it took place in the same hall where Beethoven himself had conducted the premiere of the work in 1811. In addition to his performing career, Lagger was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at several music schools throughout his career, including the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Vienna Conservatory. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music themselves. Sadly, Lagger's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1995. He continued to perform and teach for as long as he was able, but he passed away on June 12, 1997, at the age of 47. Despite his relatively short career, Peter Lagger left a lasting impact on the world of classical music. His virtuosic playing and emotional depth continue to inspire musicians and audiences alike. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of his generation.More....
