The orchestra was founded in 1941 by a group of local musicians who wanted to bring classical music to the community. The first concert was held on November 11, 1941, and was conducted by local musician and composer, Charles Peaker. Over the years, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra has grown in size and reputation, becoming one of the most respected orchestras in Canada. The orchestra is made up of over 30 full-time musicians, as well as a number of part-time and guest musicians. The Victoria Symphony Orchestra has had a number of notable conductors over the years, including Simon Streatfeild, Tania Miller, and Christian Kluxen. Each conductor has brought their own unique style and vision to the orchestra, helping to shape its sound and reputation. One of the highlights of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The orchestra was invited to perform at the opening ceremony, where they played a piece composed by Canadian composer, John Estacio.
