Roland Peelman is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a conductor, pianist, and artistic director. Born in Belgium in 1955, Peelman grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a conductor and his mother was a singer, and they both played a significant role in shaping his musical career. Peelman began his musical training at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied piano and conducting. He later went on to study at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. During his studies, Peelman was awarded several prizes and scholarships, including the Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study in Italy. After completing his studies, Peelman began his career as a conductor, working with several orchestras in Europe. In 1983, he was appointed as the conductor of the Flemish Radio Choir, a position he held for 25 years. During his tenure, Peelman transformed the choir into one of the leading ensembles in Europe, earning critical acclaim for his innovative programming and artistic vision. In addition to his work with the Flemish Radio Choir, Peelman has conducted several other orchestras and ensembles, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. He has also collaborated with several renowned soloists, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Angela Hewitt. Peelman is also a highly accomplished pianist, having performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. He has recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of the complete piano works of Belgian composer Guillaume Lekeu. In addition to his work as a conductor and pianist, Peelman is also a respected artistic director. He has held several positions in this capacity, including the artistic director of the Canberra International Music Festival and the Four Winds Festival in Bermagui, Australia. He is currently the artistic director of the Song Company, Australia's premier vocal ensemble. Throughout his career, Peelman has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the world of music. In 2007, he was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to music, and in 2014, he was awarded the prestigious APRA Art Music Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music.
